Persimmon – American-Favorite for Fruit and Timber

Why Persimmon (Diospyros Virginiana)?

American persimmon, eastern persimmon, common persimmon, simmon, possumwood, sugar plum, and possum apples are all colloquial names for the species of persimmon known scientifically as Diospyros Virginiana. It extends westward through Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Iowa, and Kansas from the southern tip of Connecticut all the way down to Florida. The tree grows naturally in the wild, and Native Americans have cultivated it for centuries to harvest its fruit and timber.

The tree is often dioecious, meaning you must have both female and male plants to get fruit. However, most cultivars are parthenocarpic (producing seedless fruit that is not pollinated).

The persimmon name may be used for both the tree and the fruit, with the latter being used in sweets and savory dishes across the South and Midwest of the United States.

When ripened, the fruit has a high vitamin C content and a flavor best described as highly astringent. Various animals consume it, including birds, opossums, raccoons, squirrels, and white-tailed deer.

Fertilization

It is generally recommended to wait to fertilize a bare root plant until it has been established in the ground and is actively growing. This can vary depending on the type of plant and the growing conditions, but it is generally best to wait at least a few weeks to a few months after planting.

During the first year, you should focus on providing the plant with the right amount of water, sunlight and soil to help it become established. Once the plant has become established and is actively growing, you can begin to fertilize it.

You can use a balanced, all-purpose fertilizer or one that is specifically formulated for the type of plant you have. Be sure to follow the instructions on the fertilizer package and apply it at the recommended rate.

It is also important to note that over-fertilizing can be harmful to plants, so it's always best to error on the side of caution and start with a lower amount of fertilizer and increase as needed.

Key Specifications

The following are some of the key specifications of Diospyros Virginiana or American Persimmon:

  • Size: Can grow up to 60-80 feet tall and 35-50 feet wide
  • Foliage: Dark green and glossy, elliptical shaped leaves that turn yellow or orange in the fall
  • Flowers and fruit: Small, inconspicuous flowers in spring, followed by orange-red fruit that ripens in late fall or early winter
  • Growth habit: Rounded, can be either a single or multi-trunked tree
  • Sunlight: Prefers full sun to partial shade
  • Soil: Tolerant of a wide range of soil types as long as they are well-drained
  • Hardiness: USDA zones 4-9, can tolerate temperatures as low as -25°F
  • pH level: Prefers a neutral pH level of around 7.0
  • Pruning: Not typically required, but can be done to shape the tree or remove dead or damaged branches
  • Pest and diseases: Relatively disease and pest resistant, but may be susceptible to leaf spot or anthracnose.

Pollination

Diospyros virginiana, also known as the American persimmon, is a dioecious species, meaning that individual trees are either male or female. Pollination is necessary for female trees to produce fruit. The flowers of the American persimmon are small and inconspicuous, but are highly attractive to a wide variety of pollinators, including bees, butterflies, and moths.

Cross-pollination is necessary for the production of fruit in female trees, so it is recommended to plant at least one male tree in the vicinity of female trees to ensure adequate pollination. Male trees can be identified by their clusters of flowers, while female trees have a single flower or a cluster of flowers that do not have stamens.

The tree is self-sterile, meaning that it needs to cross-pollinate with other individuals of the same species in order to produce fruit. Therefore, it is important to plant a male tree near female trees, to ensure that the female trees are pollinated and produce fruit.

    Persimmon bare root trees

It's really too early, but I will say they arrived alive and they are currently being stored in a cold room in my house with plans to plant them in the next couple of days when the rain lets up just a bit. I do wish there had been some instruction about whether they were ready for super cold weather or should be introduced gradually.

I ordered 12 and they arrived alive. Now to keep them that way!

They are small indeed! The trunks were thicker than I had expected and had a decent start to a root structure.

    Strong little trees!

    Posted by Janet on 02/09/18

Very nice heavy straight trunks on these persimmons. I planted them right away and they are about 2' tall, they've been in the ground for 3 days. I have purchased hundreds of bare root trees for wildlife food plots on Pine Tree Plantations over the years. This was my first order from The Tree Store and seeing their stock, I won't order bare root from anyone else again. Others I've ordered from seem dried out and not as fresh as these. Great trees @ a 2 for price which is AMAZING!
