Highbush Cranberry – A Medicinal Deciduous Shrub

Why Highbush Cranberry (Viburnum Trilobum)?

Highbush cranberry, scientifically known as Viburnum Trilobum, is a deciduous shrub—species of Viburnum native to northern North America. The bark is a harsh gray color with a scaly appearance, while the stems are arched and quite thick, and the twigs have a coloration that may be described as a reddish-brown. The plant is self-fertile, and the fruits can be eaten raw or cooked into a sauce.

The name originates from the red fruits; however, it is not a cranberry but has a visual resemblance to cranberries, possesses a taste comparable to that of cranberries, and matures at the same time of year.

After removing the giant seeds, the fruits may be eaten raw and are tart with a high vitamin C content. Alternatively, they can be prepared into a sauce and served with meat or chicken.

The juice extracted from the berries can be used to treat hypertension and infections of the urinary system, while the bark is a potent antispasmodic that may be used to relieve muscle cramps.

    American Cranberry

Bush was packed well, it looks like it had started to sprout at some point, but the sprouts are dead, hoping it will come to life at other points.

    Pleased with my purchase

    Posted by AcA on 05/31/21

I bought two cranberries. They arrived as bare rooted stems. If I remember correctly, they were the first to sprout leaves. The stems and roots on my entire order (2 persimmon, 2 cranberry, 2 hazelnut) looked healthy. Both of my cranberries continue to thrive in zone 9. I would recommend The Tree Store to any green thumb out there. They are upfront about what to expect so read thoroughly. Happy gardening.

Very nice bear root seedling, beautiful root system. I ordered several different things last year and all have adapted well to my area. I Will definitely order from here again.

I ordered some trees last year 2 of them didn't make it and when I ordered this year the tree store replaced the 2 from last year along with my new order! Plus they were generous with the free gifts. The whole order came alive and beautiful and they are looking great! Thank you!

I am very happy with both. They arrived in good condition, look very healthy and even though dormant, both are nicely shaped. I will be buying more to feed the birds. Thank you!

Lovely little trees I was very pleased. I’m always nervous ordering from a new place but my shipment arrived at a good time, in good condition and nice little trees. I was surprised to see the roots even had moisture retaining gel crystals on them and no dried out roots at all.

The two American Cranberry bushes I ordered were well packaged and had great root structure; planted everything in according to provided instructions and they're leafing out nicely after just a couple of weeks!
