Introduction:

The Red Mulberry Tree (Morus Rubra) is a fast-growing, deciduous fruit tree known for producing sweet, juicy mulberries. This hardy tree is perfect for home orchards or naturalized areas and offers a bountiful harvest of mulberries, which can be enjoyed fresh, in baked goods, or as preserves. The Red Mulberry Tree also provides shade and attracts wildlife with its abundant fruit. It thrives in a wide range of climates, making it an excellent choice for gardeners in USDA Zones 4-9.

Plant Summary:

  • Size: Grows to a height of 35-50 feet with a spread of 35-40 feet.
  • Foliage: Large, lobed green leaves turn yellow in the fall.
  • Flowers/Fruit: Inconspicuous green-yellow flowers in spring, followed by clusters of sweet, dark red to purple mulberries in summer.
  • Growth Habit: Upright with a broad, rounded canopy.
  • Sunlight: Prefers full sun to partial shade.
  • Soil: Thrives in moist, well-drained soils but adapts to a variety of soil types.
  • Hardiness: Hardy in USDA Zones 4-9.
  • pH Level: Prefers slightly acidic to neutral soils (pH 5.5 to 7.0).
  • Pruning: Prune in late winter to remove dead or damaged branches and to shape the tree.
  • Pests/Diseases: Generally pest-resistant but may occasionally be affected by scale or whiteflies.

Pollination:

The Red Mulberry Tree is primarily wind-pollinated, though it benefits from insect pollinators like bees. It is capable of self-pollination, but planting more than one tree can increase fruit yield. The small, green-yellow flowers appear in spring and give way to the tree’s delicious, sweet fruit in early to mid-summer. The mulberries attract birds and other wildlife, providing food for both humans and animals alike.

Key Benefits:

  • Max Height/Width: Reaches 35-50 feet in height and 35-40 feet in width.
  • Pruning: Prune in late winter to shape the tree and remove deadwood.

Why You'll Love It:

The Red Mulberry Tree is a valuable addition to any home orchard, providing sweet, delicious fruit and shade in a short amount of time. Its hardy nature and low-maintenance care make it perfect for gardeners of all experience levels, while its abundant mulberries offer a versatile fruit that can be enjoyed fresh or preserved. Whether you’re looking to attract wildlife or simply add a productive fruit tree to your landscape, the Red Mulberry is an excellent choice.

Planting Tips:

Plant your Red Mulberry Tree in early spring or fall in a sunny location with well-drained soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root system and plant at the same depth it was growing in the nursery. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch around the base to retain moisture. Regular watering during the first few years will help the tree establish a strong root system.

Red Mulberry Fresh and Healthy Stock

Posted by Jim Shenfish on 03/03/23

I ordered four mulberry trees, a dogwood , four Japanese maples and a persimmon, but I was blown away with the quality of the mulberry bare root trees. They look very fresh with white roots and they look like they were just dug up. I let the trees soak in water for 24 hours and planted them 3 weeks later I already have 1 inch growth on all the mulberries. Three of them have the standard mitten leaf pattern and one of them has the three lob pattern. I’m still waiting on the Japanese maples to ship. Very happy with purchase so far.

    Red Mulberry

    Posted by Unknown on 06/03/21

I’ve received my plant about a month ago, it did not leaf out yet. I’m patiently waiting to see if it will make it or not. I scratched the bark and it is going into brown mode. Hopefully, I’ll see some leaves sometime soon and hope it survives, all my other plants from this store are doing great!
