Introduction:

The Quaking Aspen Tree (Populus tremuloides), also known as Trembling Aspen, is a fast-growing deciduous tree native to North America. It is well-known for its smooth white bark and leaves that flutter in the slightest breeze, creating a "quaking" effect. Hardy in USDA Zones 2-7, the Quaking Aspen is a beautiful choice for landscapes where its bright yellow fall color adds vibrant seasonal interest. It is highly adaptable, growing in a wide range of soil types and conditions, making it a popular choice for large gardens, parks, and naturalized areas.

Plant Summary:

  • Size: Grows to a height of 40-50 feet with a spread of 20-30 feet.
  • Foliage: Bright green leaves turn golden yellow in fall.
  • Growth Habit: Upright, with an open canopy and a rounded crown.
  • Sunlight: Prefers full sun.
  • Soil: Thrives in well-drained soils but adapts to a wide range of soil types, including sandy and clay soils.
  • Hardiness: Hardy in USDA Zones 2-7.
  • pH Level: Prefers slightly acidic to neutral soils (pH 6.0-7.5).
  • Pruning: Prune in late winter to early spring to remove dead or damaged branches.
  • Pests/Diseases: Susceptible to pests like aphids and diseases like canker or leaf spot, but generally manageable with proper care.

Pollination:

The Quaking Aspen Tree is dioecious, meaning male and female flowers are produced on separate trees. However, it is typically grown for its ornamental value and shade, rather than its flowers or seeds. Its small catkins bloom in early spring, attracting bees and other pollinators.

Key Benefits:

  • Beautiful white bark and fluttering leaves that create visual interest year-round.
  • Fast-growing and ideal for providing shade or privacy in large landscapes.
  • Adaptable to various soil types and tough growing conditions.
  • Adds a striking golden fall color to your yard or garden.

Care Instructions:

  • Light: Prefers full sun for optimal growth.
  • Water: Keep soil consistently moist, especially during the first few years after planting.
  • Soil Type: Grows best in well-drained soils but adapts to sandy, loamy, or clay soils.
  • Growth Rate: Fast-growing, reaching maturity in 20-30 years.
  • Max Height/Width: Reaches 40-50 feet in height and 20-30 feet in width.
  • Pruning: Prune in late winter to early spring to shape the tree and remove deadwood.

Why You'll Love It:

The Quaking Aspen Tree adds a unique touch to any landscape with its shimmering leaves and striking white bark. Its fast growth makes it ideal for providing quick shade or privacy. It’s highly adaptable, growing in a wide range of soil types and tough conditions. Plus, the brilliant yellow fall foliage creates a stunning seasonal display, making it a favorite for parks and gardens alike.

Planting Tips:

Plant your Quaking Aspen Tree in early spring or fall in a sunny location with well-drained soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root system and plant at the same depth it was growing in the nursery. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch around the base to retain moisture. Regular watering during the first few years will help the tree establish a strong root system.

    So far so good!

Posted by Heidi Bakker on 06/15/22

I am excited to have received my trees this season, as I ordered a couple days after the order cut-off I think. I have always wanted a quaking aspen in ND, and the price was right for my budget. The tree is leafing out only 3 days after planting! Thank you for great service, TreeStore!

I couldn’t believe how well these trees were packaged. After being in the ground for only a couple days the leaves are already starting to bloom. I will most definitely be placing another order with the tree store.

    NICE TREE!

Posted by Scott Stewart on 04/08/20

I always wanted a Aspen tree here in NC. It came in a box and the roots were in a plastic bag that kept the moisture on the roots during travel. I planted it in the yard and its now starting to put on leaves. Very healthy looking little tree. I highly recommend!

Buy with confidence. The Tree Store is serious in business. I received two healthy aspen trees, one for free since I had a minor issue with shipping the first tree. I highly recommend them.
