Introduction:

The Littleleaf Linden Tree (Tilia cordata) is a fast-growing deciduous tree known for its attractive heart-shaped leaves, fragrant yellow flowers, and dense canopy. This versatile tree is often planted for its beauty, shade, and pollinator-attracting qualities. The Littleleaf Linden is a perfect addition to parks, large landscapes, or as a street tree, providing shade and ornamental interest throughout the growing season. Its small, fragrant flowers in late spring make it particularly attractive to bees and other pollinators.

Plant Summary:

  • Size: Grows to a height of 40-60 feet with a spread of 30-50 feet.
  • Foliage: Heart-shaped, dark green leaves that turn yellow in the fall.
  • Flowers/Fruit: Fragrant, pale yellow flowers in late spring to early summer, followed by small, round nutlets.
  • Growth Habit: Upright with a dense, rounded crown.
  • Sunlight: Prefers full sun to partial shade.
  • Soil: Thrives in moist, well-drained soils but tolerates a variety of soil types.
  • Hardiness: Hardy in USDA Zones 3-7.
  • pH Level: Prefers slightly acidic to neutral soils (pH 5.5 to 7.5).
  • Pruning: Prune in late winter to remove dead or damaged branches and to shape the tree.
  • Pests/Diseases: Generally pest-resistant but may occasionally be affected by aphids and Japanese beetles.

Pollination:

The Littleleaf Linden Tree is pollinated by bees, which are attracted to its fragrant, pale yellow flowers. These flowers bloom in late spring to early summer, providing an important nectar source for pollinators. The tree produces small, round nutlets after flowering, though it is primarily grown for its ornamental value rather than for its fruit.

Key Benefits:

  • Provides dense, cool shade with its large, rounded canopy.
  • Fragrant, pale yellow flowers attract bees and other pollinators.
  • Hardy and adaptable to a wide range of soil types and growing conditions.
  • Ideal for large landscapes, parks, and street planting.
  • Low-maintenance tree that adds beauty and function to any setting.

Care Instructions:

  • Light: Prefers full sun for optimal growth but tolerates partial shade.
  • Water: Keep soil consistently moist, especially during dry periods.
  • Soil Type: Thrives in well-drained soils but adapts to sandy, clay, or loamy soils.
  • Pollination: Pollinated by bees; flowers bloom in late spring to early summer.
  • Growth Rate: Fast-growing, reaching up to 2-3 feet per year.
  • Max Height/Width: Reaches 40-60 feet in height and 30-50 feet in width.
  • Pruning: Prune in late winter to shape the tree and remove deadwood.

Why You'll Love It:

The Littleleaf Linden Tree is a versatile and beautiful addition to any large landscape, offering both ornamental value and functional shade. Its dense canopy provides excellent shelter from the sun, while its fragrant flowers attract pollinators, making it an eco-friendly choice for parks, streetscapes, or backyards. Low maintenance and fast-growing, this hardy tree is sure to become a favorite in any setting.

Planting Tips:

Plant your Littleleaf Linden Tree in early spring or fall in a sunny location with well-drained soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root system and plant at the same depth it was growing in the nursery. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch around the base to retain moisture and reduce competition from weeds. Regular watering during the first few years will help establish a strong root system.

    Small, but hopefully mighty!

Posted by G. Paul on 03/20/18

The trees arrived a few days after receipt of an email notification of shipment. They are small - about 15" - but they look healthy. I soaked them overnight and planted them the next afternoon. We have had snowfall and below freezing temperatures, so I hope they are OK. Time will tell.
