Introduction:

The Hybrid Poplar (Cottonless Cottonwood) (Populus deltoides X Populus nigra) is a fast-growing tree ideal for creating quick shade, privacy screens, or windbreaks. Known for its vigorous growth, this cottonless variety does not produce the messy cotton seeds typical of other cottonwoods, making it a great choice for residential and commercial landscapes. This hybrid variety is hardy in USDA Zones 3-9 and thrives in a variety of soil types, adapting to a wide range of growing conditions.

Plant Summary:

  • Size: Grows to a height of 40-50 feet with a spread of 20-30 feet.
  • Foliage: Bright green, triangular leaves that turn yellow in the fall.
  • Growth Habit: Upright, spreading growth habit with an oval or pyramidal shape.
  • Sunlight: Prefers full sun.
  • Soil: Thrives in well-drained, loamy soils but adapts to a variety of soil types, including clay and sandy soils.
  • Hardiness: Hardy in USDA Zones 3-9.
  • pH Level: Prefers slightly acidic to neutral soils (pH 6.0-7.5).
  • Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead or damaged branches and to shape the tree.
  • Pests/Diseases: Resistant to most common pests and diseases but may occasionally encounter issues with leaf spots or cankers.

Pollination:

The Hybrid Poplar (Cottonless Cottonwood) does not require cross-pollination and does not produce cottony seeds. This makes it an ideal choice for areas where minimizing seed production is a priority, such as near homes or driveways.

Key Benefits:

  • Rapid growth, making it an excellent choice for creating fast-growing privacy screens, windbreaks, or shade.
  • Cottonless variety, so no messy seeds are produced.

  • Low-maintenance and drought-tolerant once established.

Care Instructions:

  • Light: Prefers full sun for optimal growth.
  • Water: Keep soil consistently moist, especially during the first few years after planting. Once established, it becomes more drought-tolerant.
  • Soil Type: Thrives in well-drained, loamy soils but can adapt to other soil types, including clay and sandy soils.
  • Growth Rate: Very fast-growing, reaching maturity in 10-15 years.
  • Max Height/Width: Reaches 40-50 feet in height and 20-30 feet in width.
  • Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to shape the tree and remove any dead or damaged branches.

Why You'll Love It:

The Hybrid Poplar is one of the fastest-growing trees available, making it ideal for homeowners or landscapers looking for a quick solution to add shade or privacy. Its cottonless characteristic eliminates the seed mess often associated with cottonwoods, making it a clean and low-maintenance option. With its bright green leaves and upright growth habit, the Hybrid Poplar adds beauty and function to any landscape.

Planting Tips:

Plant your Hybrid Poplar (Cottonless Cottonwood) in early spring or fall in a sunny location with well-drained soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root system and plant at the same depth it was growing in the nursery. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch around the base to retain moisture. Regular watering during the first few years will help the tree establish a strong root system.

    Easy

Last winter every tree in the neighborhood died. After a desert dinner without trees I wanted something that grew fast. My husband was shocked when one little tree had a growth spurt. It's funny what I can't buy in Cali because we're not allowed to ship it to Cali. I wonder if they sell squeaky cheese? I did not have to do a scratch test. They were nice and green.

    Hybrid Poplar Tree

Very fast grower, at least 8” of growth in height the first 6 months. Trees arrived well packed, ready to go in the ground. Buds were present on arrival and became leaves shortly after being planted. Will order more trees due to the success I’ve had with my first order.
