Introduction:

The Hansen's Bush Cherry (Prunus besseyi) is a hardy, fast-growing shrub that produces small, sweet cherries ideal for fresh eating or making preserves. This compact fruit-bearing shrub is perfect for small spaces, home orchards, or edible landscaping. Hansen's Bush Cherry is known for its beautiful spring flowers and abundant cherry harvest in the summer, making it both a functional and ornamental addition to any garden.

Plant Summary:

  • Size: Grows to a height of 4-6 feet with a spread of 4-6 feet.
  • Foliage: Dark green, oval-shaped leaves turn reddish-purple in the fall.
  • Flowers/Fruit: Fragrant white flowers in spring, followed by small, dark red cherries in summer.
  • Growth Habit: Compact, rounded habit with multiple stems.
  • Sunlight: Prefers full sun.

Pollination:

Hansen's Bush Cherry is self-pollinating, which means it does not require another plant nearby to produce fruit. However, planting multiple shrubs can increase yield. The shrub's fragrant white flowers attract bees and other pollinators, ensuring a healthy fruit harvest in the summer.

Why You'll Love It:

Hansen's Bush Cherry is a delightful addition to any edible landscape or home orchard, offering both beauty and bounty. Its fragrant spring blooms attract pollinators, while its sweet cherries are perfect for fresh eating or making homemade jams and preserves. The shrub’s compact size makes it a versatile choice for small gardens, and its hardy nature ensures a reliable cherry harvest year after year.

Planting Tips:

Plant your Hansen's Bush Cherry in early spring or fall in a sunny location with well-drained soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root system, and water thoroughly after planting. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and reduce competition from weeds. Regular watering during the first few years will help establish a strong root system and promote healthy growth.

    Hansen bush cherries

    Posted by Carolyn on 12/17/20

They arrived in a very nice cardboard container. Plants looked extremely healthy but were in a dormant state. Which is what I had expected. Both plants were around two feet tall with 2/3 main branches. Very impressed so far. I rated them a four star since time will tell if they survive until spring.

So far all 4 bushes seem to have planted well

I'm not an experienced gardener, so if something survives in my hands, it must be good.

Small twigs with lots of buds, healthy roots

Posted by Diane Kistner on 01/20/20

These bush cherries are definitely dormant but seem very healthy with no rotten roots or damage. I've read that the smaller bareroot offerings actually do better in the long run than the larger ones, so the size is not an issue for me, especially at the two-pack price. The twigs are about a foot long from the soil line, and the roots are ample. I planted all six in a grouping spaced about 5 feet apart, and I'm hoping they're going to be pretty when they get bigger.

    Bush Cherries

A bit early to actually say how they will be. Only been in the ground a couple weeks. Altho at least 2 of the 4 ordered have started to break dormancy. Ordered some last year and am impressed with their growth. I would imagine these will be just as good.

These plants arrived in great shape and well packaged. This is my second time buying these cherry bushes. I planted some last year and they grew amazingly. Worth every penny!
