Introduction:

The Chinese Chestnut Tree (Castanea mollissima) is a fast-growing, deciduous tree known for producing large, sweet, and edible chestnuts. This hardy tree is resistant to chestnut blight and thrives in a variety of growing conditions, making it an excellent choice for home orchards and wildlife gardens. Its dark green leaves turn golden yellow in the fall, providing both beauty and bounty as it produces its flavorful nuts each year.

Plant Summary:

  • Size: Grows to a height of 40-60 feet with a spread of 40-60 feet.
  • Foliage: Dark green, glossy leaves with serrated edges, turning golden yellow in the fall.
  • Flowers/Fruit: Long, yellow catkins in late spring, followed by spiny burrs containing large, sweet chestnuts.
  • Growth Habit: Rounded, spreading form with a dense canopy.
  • Sunlight: Prefers full sun.
  • Soil: Thrives in well-drained, loamy soils but tolerates sandy and clay soils.
  • Hardiness: Hardy in USDA Zones 4-8.
  • pH Level: Prefers slightly acidic to neutral soils (pH 5.5 to 6.5).
  • Pruning: Prune in late winter to remove dead or damaged branches and to shape the tree.
  • Pests/Diseases: Resistant to chestnut blight, but occasionally affected by weevils and chestnut gall wasp.

Pollination:

The Chinese Chestnut Tree is partially self-fertile, meaning it will produce some nuts on its own, but for the best yield, it is recommended to plant at least two trees for cross-pollination. The tree is pollinated primarily by wind and insects, with its long, fragrant catkins attracting pollinators in late spring. After pollination, the tree produces spiny burrs that contain the large, sweet chestnuts, which are ready for harvest in the fall.

Key Benefits:

  • Produces large, sweet, edible chestnuts that can be roasted, boiled, or used in baking.
  • Resistant to chestnut blight, making it a hardy and reliable choice for home orchards.
  • Beautiful dark green foliage provides shade and turns a vibrant golden yellow in the fall.
  • Provides habitat and food for wildlife, including birds and small mammals.
  • Adaptable to various soil types, including sandy and clay soils.

Care Instructions:

  • Light: Prefers full sun for optimal growth and nut production.
  • Water: Water regularly, especially during dry periods, to keep the soil consistently moist.
  • Soil Type: Grows best in well-drained, loamy soils but tolerates sandy or clay soils.
  • Pollination: Partially self-fertile, but planting multiple trees improves nut yield.
  • Growth Rate: Moderate growth rate, reaching maturity in 10-15 years.
  • Max Height/Width: Reaches 40-60 feet in height and spread.
  • Pruning: Prune in late winter to remove deadwood and shape the tree.

Why You'll Love It:

The Chinese Chestnut Tree offers both beauty and productivity, with its sweet, edible chestnuts and striking fall foliage. It is a perfect addition to any home orchard, providing a bountiful harvest each year and attracting wildlife to your garden. Its resistance to chestnut blight makes it a reliable choice, and its adaptability to different soil types ensures that it will thrive in a variety of conditions. Whether you're looking to grow your own chestnuts or simply want to add a beautiful, shade-providing tree to your landscape, the Chinese Chestnut is an excellent choice.

Planting Tips:

Plant your Chinese Chestnut Tree in early spring or fall in a sunny location with well-drained soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and plant at the same depth it was growing in the nursery. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. To ensure a good nut harvest, plant at least two trees for cross-pollination.

Shipping Details:

Your Chinese Chestnut Tree will be shipped as a bare root plant, carefully packaged to ensure it arrives in optimal condition. Bare root plants are shipped during dormancy to promote successful transplanting and establishment in your landscape.

    Chinese Chestnut Seedlings

Posted by Charles A Sanders on 04/02/20

The trees arrived healthy with good root systems. They were not close to the tall end of the 1-3 ft. range, but they were nice enough. The addition of the 2 free Red Osier Dogwoods was much appreciated. Thank you.

I order 8 of these, six are growing that is pretty normal for me. They are not supposed to grow here in Texas but I thought I would give them a try.

I received my plants. They appear to be dormant and healthy at this point. They arrived exactly as I expected they would. Happy with the customer service and quick responses. Am excited to be planting them soon.
