Introduction:

The Sugar Maple Tree (Acer saccharum) is a fast-growing, deciduous tree celebrated for its stunning fall foliage and the production of sap used to make maple syrup. Known for its beautiful display of vibrant yellow, orange, and red leaves in the fall, the Sugar Maple is a popular choice for homeowners and landscapers alike. Its dense canopy provides excellent shade, making it ideal for large landscapes, parks, or streetscapes. The Sugar Maple’s hardiness and adaptability to various soil types make it a versatile and low-maintenance choice for your landscape.

Plant Summary:

  • Size: Grows to a height of 60-75 feet with a spread of 40-60 feet.
  • Foliage: Broad, lobed green leaves turn brilliant shades of yellow, orange, and red in the fall.
  • Flowers/Fruit: Small, greenish-yellow flowers in spring, followed by winged seeds (samaras).
  • Growth Habit: Upright with a broad, rounded canopy.
  • Sunlight: Prefers full sun to partial shade.
  • Soil: Thrives in moist, well-drained soils but adapts to a variety of soil types, including clay and loamy soils.
  • Hardiness: Hardy in USDA Zones 3-8.

  • Pruning: Prune in late winter to remove dead or damaged branches and to shape the tree.
  • Pests/Diseases: Generally pest-resistant but may occasionally be affected by aphids, leaf scorch, or tar spot.

Pollination:

The Sugar Maple Tree is wind-pollinated, with small greenish-yellow flowers appearing in early spring. These flowers give way to the tree’s distinctive winged seeds, known as samaras, which mature in late summer to early fall. The Sugar Maple’s iconic leaves and brilliant fall color make it a favorite for both urban and rural landscapes.

Planting Tips:

Plant your Sugar Maple Tree in early spring or fall in a sunny location with well-drained soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and plant at the same depth it was growing in the nursery. I order two sugar maples. They seem like they are in good shape but they are very small. I guess I will have more time to enjoy watching them grow up.
