Introduction:

The Northern Bayberry Bush (Myrica pensylvanica) is a hardy, fast-growing deciduous shrub known for its fragrant, glossy green foliage and waxy, grayish-white berries. This versatile shrub is perfect for naturalized landscapes, wildlife gardens, and erosion control due to its ability to thrive in poor, sandy soils. The aromatic leaves and berries provide both ornamental and practical benefits, with the berries historically used for making bayberry candles. Northern Bayberry is an excellent choice for gardeners looking to attract birds and wildlife while adding low-maintenance beauty to their landscapes.

Plant Summary:

  • Size: Grows to a height of 5-10 feet with a spread of 5-10 feet.
  • Foliage: Glossy, aromatic green leaves that remain semi-evergreen in mild climates.
  • Flowers/Fruit: Small, inconspicuous flowers followed by clusters of waxy, grayish-white berries.
  • Growth Habit: Upright, spreading habit with a dense form.
  • Sunlight: Prefers full sun to partial shade.
  • Soil: Thrives in poor, sandy soils but adapts to a variety of soil types.
  • Hardiness: Hardy in USDA Zones 3-7.
  • pH Level: Tolerates a wide range of soil pH levels, from acidic to alkaline.
  • Pruning: Prune in late winter to remove dead or damaged branches and to shape the bush.
  • Pests/Diseases: Generally pest-resistant and low maintenance.

Pollination:

The Northern Bayberry Bush is primarily pollinated by the wind. Male and female flowers appear on separate plants, so it is essential to plant both male and female shrubs to produce the waxy berries. The berries, which ripen in the fall, are an important food source for birds and wildlife during the winter months. This shrub is an excellent choice for gardeners looking to attract wildlife and add ornamental value to their landscapes.

Why You'll Love It:

The Northern Bayberry Bush is a hardy, low-maintenance shrub that adds both beauty and functionality to any landscape. Its fragrant foliage and waxy berries provide year-round interest, while its ability to thrive in poor soils makes it an excellent choice for erosion control and coastal planting. The berries are also a valuable food source for birds, making this shrub a great addition to wildlife gardens.

Planting Tips:

Plant your Northern Bayberry Bush in early spring or fall in a sunny location with well-drained soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root system and plant at the same depth it was growing in the nursery. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch around the base to retain moisture. Regular watering during the first few years will help the shrub establish a strong root system and promote healthy growth.

    Bayberries in Michigan

    Posted by jackie on 06/14/18

My order came at a perfect time, just right for planting. I ordered 2 bayberry bushes and received a nanny berry bush as a gift. I have planted all three in the same area. I must have done something right because the nanny berry bush has new leaves already. I am waiting for signs of growth for my bayberry. I am so excited I have always wanted bayberry.
