Introduction:

The Dawn Redwood Tree (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) is a fast-growing, deciduous conifer known for its beautiful feathery foliage and striking, pyramidal shape. This ancient tree, once thought to be extinct, is a remarkable addition to any landscape, providing a unique blend of beauty and history. In autumn, the light green needles turn a stunning orange-brown before shedding for the winter, offering year-round interest.

Plant Summary:

  • Size: Grows to a height of 70-100 feet with a spread of 15-25 feet.
  • Foliage: Light green, feathery needles that turn orange-brown in fall.
  • Flowers/Fruit: Inconspicuous flowers, followed by small, rounded cones.
  • Growth Habit: Pyramidal shape with a straight trunk.
  • Sunlight: Prefers full sun.
  • Soil: Thrives in moist, well-drained soils but tolerates wet conditions.

Pollination:

The Dawn Redwood Tree is monoecious, with both male and female cones present on the same tree. The wind carries pollen from the male cones to the female cones, allowing for seed production. While self-pollinating, the Dawn Redwood produces small, rounded cones that ripen in the fall.

Why You'll Love It:

The Dawn Redwood Tree is a magnificent addition to any landscape, offering a blend of fast growth, low maintenance, and year-round beauty. Its unique status as a deciduous conifer, coupled with its stunning fall color and towering height, makes it a standout tree. Perfect for large landscapes, parks, or naturalized areas, the Dawn Redwood adds a touch of history and grandeur to any setting.

Planting Tips:

Plant your Dawn Redwood Tree in early spring or fall in a sunny location with moist, well-drained soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and plant at the same depth it was growing in the nursery. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch around the base to retain moisture. While drought-tolerant once established, regular watering during dry spells is recommended to maintain healthy growth.

    Dawn Redwood trees

Posted by Ed Dobrowolski on 02/07/21

Trees arrived 14 days after the shipping date. They look healthy. We experienced three snowstorms in the next three weeks and I wasn't able to plant the trees. I kept them heeled in a tub of soil in an unheated garage. Hopefully, they'll last until I can get them into the ground. Thanks

I bought two specimens of Dawn Redwood and both are doing well. Also received a Mulberry bush as a gift and that too is doing well.
