Introduction:

The Bald Cypress Tree (Taxodium distichum) is a unique, fast-growing deciduous conifer well-known for its ability to thrive in wet areas, such as swamps and riverbanks. It is an excellent choice for landscaping in areas with poor drainage or near bodies of water. Hardy in USDA Zones 4-9, the Bald Cypress features soft, feathery foliage that turns a lovely copper color in the fall before dropping. It is a low-maintenance tree that can reach impressive heights and is resilient to harsh conditions, including flooding and drought.

Plant Summary:

  • Size: Grows to a height of 50-70 feet with a spread of 20-30 feet.
  • Foliage: Soft, feathery green leaves that turn copper in the fall.
  • Growth Habit: Upright, pyramidal growth habit.
  • Sunlight: Prefers full sun.
  • Soil: Thrives in moist, well-drained soil but adapts to a wide range of soil types, including clay and sandy soils. Can also tolerate periodic flooding.
  • Hardiness: Hardy in USDA Zones 4-9.
  • pH Level: Prefers slightly acidic to neutral soils (pH 5.5-7.0).
  • Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead or damaged branches.
  • Pests/Diseases: Generally resistant to pests and diseases but may occasionally experience root rot in extremely wet conditions.

Pollination:

The Bald Cypress Tree is monoecious, meaning it produces both male and female cones on the same tree. It does not require a second tree for pollination, and its small, woody cones develop over the summer and fall, maturing in late fall. While not typically grown for its cones, the Bald Cypress is primarily appreciated for its ornamental value and ability to thrive in challenging conditions.

Key Benefits:

  • Excellent for wet areas and landscapes near water, such as swamps, ponds, or riverbanks.
  • Low-maintenance and adaptable to tough conditions, including drought and periodic flooding.

  • Light: Prefers full sun for optimal growth.

  • Soil Type: Prefers moist, well-drained soil but adapts to a wide range of soil types, including clay, loam, and sand.
  • Growth Rate: Fast-growing, reaching maturity in 20-30 years.
  • Max Height/Width: Reaches 50-70 feet in height and 20-30 feet in width.
  • Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead or damaged branches.

Why You'll Love It:

The Bald Cypress Tree is a tough, fast-growing conifer that adds beauty and resilience to any landscape. Its ability to thrive in wet or periodically flooded areas makes it an excellent choice for challenging sites. The tree's unique copper-colored fall foliage and feathery texture make it a standout in any garden. Plus, it’s incredibly low-maintenance and can withstand droughts once established.

Planting Tips:

Plant your Bald Cypress Tree in early spring or fall in a sunny location with well-drained, moist soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root system and plant at the same depth it was growing in the nursery. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch around the base to retain moisture. Regular watering during the first few years will help the tree establish a strong root system.

This is my 2nd order of the bare root bald cypress trees. The prior ones seem to be off to a great start and I would imagine these will do well also. They arrived fairly quickly after they were shipped and are well packaged for their trip to northeast Texas during the Christmas seasonal rush that USPS is in the midst of...

    Received it too late

    Posted by Sarah on 01/16/18

Ordered in the early spring, just got It in mid January. Utah is having a very mild winter so far but I think I’ll need to keep it in winter storage until late spring. I’ve never had to do this so I am hoping it will be okay until then. I am really excited for this tree since I know of only one other one in the area I am in. Here’s to hoping I can get him to grow and thrive here.
