Sycamore – Famous for Camouflage Patterned Bark

Why Sycamore (Platanus Occidentalis)?

Platanus occidentalis is indigenous to the eastern and central parts of the United States. It is also known as the American sycamore, the occidental plane, the American planetree, buttonwood, the western plane, and water beech. The speckled bark of an American sycamore tree peels away in vast, irregular chunks, making the surface of the tree seem mottled and various shades of gray, greenish-white, and brown. This feature allows the tree to be differentiated from other species of trees.

Indigenous peoples of North America used Sycamore for a wide range of therapeutic applications, including but not limited to treatments for gynecological, respiratory, and gastrointestinal issues.

Although it has a coarse grain and is difficult to work with, it has been used to manufacture furniture and musical instruments. Its primary usage, however, has been in constructing boxes and crates.

The American sycamore can tolerate the atmosphere of a big city and was formerly widely planted as a shade tree.

trees arrived on time, in good condition. I will need at least the spring to know how well they are going to grow.

    American sycamore zone 6

    Posted by MC on 05/29/21

I purchased 3 bare root American sycamore saplings, the smallest available, and received them after fall in zone 6. We have rocky, sandy, acidic, poor soil on a hill that is windy and doesn’t receive irrigation. We are also experiencing a bit of a drought. I planted them with a little Porto g soil around the roots, and mulched a little on top. One tree was bitten in half by a bunny, so I put vinyl coil around them after that to protect the stems. Other than that i didn’t do anything else. In May, after a cold winter, all three have now leafed out and despite a long dry spell, they are all doing well. I just poured a little water from a bucket on each during the dry spell and that seemed to pull them through. Most other things I planted on this hill died. I highly recommend these tough trees!

    Received in Excellent Condition

Posted by Michele L. Rondeau on 05/20/19

I was very pleased with my shipment. It was wrapped and the roots were kept moist. The roots had no visible damage of being trimmed. The trees were shipped in a hard cardboard box to prevent damage with handling. I planted them in the ground the same day that I received them and will see how they do this spring.
