Introduction:

The American Persimmon Tree (Diospyros virginiana) is a hardy, fruit-bearing tree known for its sweet, orange persimmons, which ripen in the fall. These delicious fruits are perfect for fresh eating, baking, and making preserves. The American Persimmon Tree is also admired for its ornamental value, with large, glossy green leaves and attractive bark. This low-maintenance tree thrives in a variety of soil conditions and is an excellent choice for home orchards, wildlife gardens, or as a striking specimen tree.

Plant Summary:

  • Size: Grows to a height of 35-60 feet with a spread of 20-35 feet.
  • Foliage: Large, glossy green leaves turn yellow in the fall.
  • Flowers/Fruit: Small, fragrant white flowers in spring, followed by sweet, orange persimmons in fall.
  • Growth Habit: Upright, rounded growth habit with a straight trunk.
  • Sunlight: Prefers full sun.
  • Soil: Thrives in moist, well-drained soils but adapts to a variety of soil types.
  • Hardiness: Hardy in USDA Zones 4-9.
  • pH Level: Prefers slightly acidic to neutral soils (pH 5.5 to 7.0).
  • Pruning: Prune in late winter to remove dead or damaged branches and to shape the tree.
  • Pests/Diseases: Generally pest-resistant but may occasionally be affected by scale or leaf spot.

Pollination:

The American Persimmon Tree is dioecious, meaning it has separate male and female trees. For fruit production, you will need at least one male tree to pollinate the female tree. Its small, fragrant white flowers bloom in spring and attract bees and other pollinators. The orange persimmons ripen in late fall and are a favorite for fresh eating, baking, or making preserves.

Key Benefits:

  • Light: Prefers full sun for optimal fruit production.
  • Water: Keep soil consistently moist, especially during dry periods.
  • Soil Type: Grows best in moist, well-drained soils but adapts to sandy or loamy soils.
  • Pollination: Dioecious; plant both male and female trees for optimal fruit production.
  • Growth Rate: Moderate-growing, reaching maturity in 10-20 years.
  • Max Height/Width: Reaches 35-60 feet in height and 20-35 feet in width.
  • Pruning: Prune in late winter to shape the tree and remove deadwood.

Why You'll Love It:

The American Persimmon Tree is a wonderful addition to any landscape, offering both ornamental beauty and delicious, edible fruit. Its sweet persimmons are a treat for both humans and wildlife, while its glossy green leaves and fragrant flowers make it a standout in your yard. Whether you’re interested in growing your own fruit or adding a low-maintenance, visually appealing tree to your garden, the American Persimmon is an excellent choice.

Planting Tips:

Plant your American Persimmon Tree in early spring or fall in a sunny location with well-drained soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root system and plant at the same depth it was growing in the nursery. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch around the base to retain moisture. Regular watering during the first few years will help the tree establish a strong root system.

    Pleased with my purchase

    Posted by AcA on 05/31/21

I ordered two persimmon trees. The order came with detailed instructions. Despite the fact that I really didn't follow the instructions because we got hit with a FREEZE resulting in a crisis here in Houston AND the trees were inadvertantly left inside the package for an extended period of time. We'll blame my sister on that. These the bare rooted stems finally made it into large pots. I gave both of them to my mother, who lives 1.5 hrs outside of Houston and has deer roaming her neighborhood. I understand deer love persimmon and once the trees have matured sufficiently she will transfer to the ground. Wish I could post a picture. The trees continue to thrive. Will buy again for my sister's property.
