Introduction:

The American Hazelnut Tree (Corylus americana) is a fast-growing, deciduous shrub or small tree that produces delicious, edible hazelnuts. The tree is highly valued for its nut production, as well as its ornamental appeal, with attractive green leaves that turn shades of yellow and red in the fall. The American Hazelnut Tree is easy to grow and adapts well to a wide range of soil conditions, making it a versatile addition to home gardens, wildlife gardens, or orchards. Its dense branches also provide excellent cover and food for birds and wildlife.

Plant Summary:

  • Size: Grows to a height of 10-18 feet with a spread of 8-15 feet.
  • Foliage: Rounded, serrated green leaves turn yellow, orange, or red in the fall.
  • Flowers/Fruit: Yellowish catkins (male flowers) and small, red female flowers in spring, followed by edible hazelnuts in late summer.
  • Growth Habit: Upright, bushy growth habit with multiple stems.
  • Sunlight: Prefers full sun to partial shade.
  • Soil: Thrives in moist, well-drained soils but adapts to a variety of soil types.
  • Hardiness: Hardy in USDA Zones 4-9.
  • pH Level: Prefers slightly acidic to neutral soils (pH 6.0 to 7.0).
  • Pruning: Prune in late winter to remove dead or damaged branches and to shape the shrub.
  • Pests/Diseases: Generally pest-resistant but may occasionally be affected by weevils or blight.

Pollination:

The American Hazelnut Tree is wind-pollinated and requires cross-pollination with another hazelnut tree for optimal nut production. The tree produces male catkins and small red female flowers in early spring, followed by clusters of hazelnuts in late summer. Hazelnuts are encased in a leafy husk and are ready for harvest when they turn brown and begin to fall from the tree.

Key Benefits:

  • Produces delicious hazelnuts that are perfect for fresh eating, baking, and culinary uses.
  • Attractive fall foliage provides seasonal beauty to your garden or landscape.
  • Hardy and adaptable, thriving in a variety of soil types and growing conditions.
  • Provides excellent cover and food for wildlife, especially birds and small mammals.
  • Low-maintenance shrub that can be grown in both home gardens and wildlife areas.

Care Instructions:

  • Light: Prefers full sun for optimal nut production but tolerates partial shade.
  • Water: Keep soil consistently moist, especially during dry periods.
  • Soil Type: Grows best in moist, well-drained soils but adapts to sandy or loamy soils.
  • Pollination: Wind-pollinated, requires cross-pollination with another hazelnut tree for optimal nut production.
  • Growth Rate: Fast-growing, reaching maturity in 4-5 years.
  • Max Height/Width: Reaches 10-18 feet in height and 8-15 feet in width.
  • Pruning: Prune in late winter to shape the tree and remove deadwood.

Why You'll Love It:

The American Hazelnut Tree is a versatile and productive addition to any landscape, offering both ornamental beauty and an abundant harvest of tasty, nutritious hazelnuts. Its dense branches and vibrant fall foliage make it an attractive choice for wildlife gardens, while its fast growth and easy-care nature make it perfect for home orchards. Whether you’re interested in growing your own nuts or providing a valuable resource for wildlife, the American Hazelnut Tree is an excellent choice.

Planting Tips:

Plant your American Hazelnut Tree in early spring or fall in a sunny location with well-drained soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root system and plant at the same depth it was growing in the nursery. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch around the base to retain moisture. Regular watering during the first few years will help the tree establish a strong root system.

Trees arrived well packed, ready to go in the ground. Buds were present on arrival and became leaves shortly after being planted. Will order more trees due to the success I’ve had with my first order.
