Why Butternut?

The butternut tree belongs to the walnut family and is a small to medium-sized tree that can grow up to 40–60' tall and has a massive spread of 35–50' at maturity. Its majestic size and alluring beauty make it the perfect addition to your garden and ensure you have plenty of shade available.

The light-colored wood has a natural golden luster and is extensively used for making furniture, hard-carved wall panels, altars, decorations, and interior woodwork. It is often stocked at lumber yards because of its limited cutting annually.

Butternuts are slow-growing trees and seldom live longer than 76 years. It prefers acidic, alkaline, moist, loamy, well-drained wet and clay soils and direct sunlight for at least 6 hours daily.

Juglans cinerea starts bearing nuts 7 to 10 years after planting. The nuts have a sweet, buttery flavor and are used for baking, confections, and fresh eating.

Pollination: Self-fertile but requires wind to pollinate

    American Buttnut Tree

Posted by Reginald Tobias on 06/21/23

I ordered the trees early enough so they could be planted in early spring. Got three nice saplings about two feet tall with very nice rooting. Unfortunately I didn't receiver the plants until mid June with no leaves just dormant buds.. Not a good time to plant. I will re-review this order when it is clear if the trees survive.

The trees were well prepared and packed; I planted them almost immediately and they are looking very well, sporting some nice new shoots.
