The sweetbay magnolia can be expected to grow well in Hardiness Zones 5–9. Large blooms of white flowers can be seen from late spring to early summer. It will grow to a height of 10–20' and a spread of 10–20' at maturity. This tree grows at a medium to fast rate, with height increases of anywhere from 13" to more than 24" per year. The sweetbay magnolia will do well in either full sun or partial shade making it versatile. It is a tolerant plant that grows in acidic, loamy, moist, rich, sandy, silty loam, well-drained and wet soils. The fruit is eaten by small mammals, turkey, and song birds. Upon arrival the ship height of the sweetbay magnolia is 18-24 in.
