Red Oak – Fiery, Fast, and Spiky

Why Red Oak (Quercus Rubra?

The fiery, fast, and spiky red oak, scientifically known as Quercus rubra, is a tree native to North America and Canada and has a rapid growth rate. Because of the fiery color of its leaves in the fall, it is often used as an ornamental tree. Nesting birds and pollinators love it, even though it doesn't provide quite the same benefits to wildlife as native oaks do. It has been brought to a few isolated regions in Western Europe, and nowadays, it is common to see it grown in parks and gardens.

The red oak is a broadleaf deciduous tree and has a crown that is conical in shape. When the bark is young, it is smooth and a silvery gray color; as the tree matures, it develops warts or ridges.

After being pollinated by the wind, female flowers mature into a fruit surrounded by a rounded cup and are referred to as an acorn. The ripening process takes place over two and a half years.

Red oak is often grown for its decorative value in public parks, bridges, and private gardens. However, red oak wood is commonly used for constructing wooden goods in North America.
